The PaaS

SaaS History

The Year?  2000.  The idea began to germinate.  Initially - as a multiuser, server application that would allow collaboration for the design of Pdfs on the web.  The term 'Software as a Service' had not yet been coined.
January 2003:  Active coding for [idea] began and was given the name Younicycle later that year.  Version 1 was MySQL , Php 4 & Actionscript 1.  A simplified GUI that included drawing tools was developed.  Early experiments with Pdf generation used FPHP led us to add PdfLib.  On line 'pseudo Tables and JOINS' were developed, via PHP.  It became obvious by end of 2003 that a complete rewrite was necessary.0% of the vsn 1code remains in the V3.0.  Wayback
Spring 2004- June 2006:  Version 2 began with PostgreSQL 7.4, Php 4, AS2 + many other building blocks.  These were the 'learning years', both in terms of our own Knowledge, but also Project Goals.  Building an SaaS that was designed to Build SaaS, was not a trivial Task. Practical Goals such as creating websites online were added.   Approximately 2% of this code remains in the current vsn (portions of the Template Editor).  Wayback
June 2006 - present:1,562 features, fixes and bugs have been resolved to date.Version 3 began in June 2006 with PostgreSQL 8.1.2, Php 5.0.  Four full-time developers were assigned, with three of those developers still fully dedicated to the Project.  The importance of developer continuity cannot be overstated.Jan 2008: The internal set of Tools became sufficiently developed such that our 1st website was developed and served directly from within an online Account.  Others followed.September 2008:  Our intent was to release the Younicycle Server Package in December, 2008.  A 'pre-release' review of Younicycle was provided by Andrew Sullivan (a PostgreSQL expert).  Though generally favorable, one item 'hit home'. Younicycle (at that time), still did not have a graceful means of handling CSS.  That one mentioned item resulted in a flurry of improvements to ALL aspects of Younicycle.  Many of the features planned for Younicycle 4 - were moved into this version (V3).
